How to Water Hanging Baskets Properly

One of the most important things you can do to keep your hanging baskets looking beautiful all summer is to water them properly.

Hanging baskets have a limited amount of soil, and because they are exposed to sun and wind, they can dry out quickly. The key is deep, thorough watering—not just a quick splash.

How Much Water Does a Hanging Basket Need?

For a 13-inch hanging basket, we recommend applying approximately 3 litres of water each time you water.

Water slowly and thoroughly until the entire root ball is soaked and water begins to drain from the bottom of the basket. This ensures moisture reaches all the roots instead of running down the sides and out before the soil has a chance to absorb it.

How Often Should You Water?

During normal summer weather, most 13-inch baskets need to be watered once a day.

When temperatures reach 30°C or higher, baskets may need water twice a day—once in the morning and again later in the afternoon. Hot temperatures, wind, and full sun can cause baskets to dry out much faster.

Signs Your Basket Needs More Water

  • Leaves are wilting or drooping

  • Flowers are fading quickly

  • The basket feels unusually light

  • Water runs straight through without soaking in (the soil may have become too dry)

If your basket dries out completely, water slowly and allow time for the soil to absorb the moisture. You may need to water in stages rather than applying all the water at once.

Good Drainage Matters

Healthy roots need both water and air. Make sure your basket has good drainage holes so excess water can escape. A basket sitting in water for long periods can lead to root problems.

A little daily attention goes a long way. With the right amount of water, your hanging baskets will reward you with lush growth and beautiful blooms all season long.
